IMSA Race Weekend

I’m back at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park once again. This weekend is International Motor Sports Association, (IMSA) Race Weekend. A totally different weekend than that of NASCAR weekend as two styles of cars race on the track together.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportCar series features prototype cars, showcasing the latest automotive technology and then uniquely designed for the race track. The second type of cars are the GT cars based on road models such as Acura, BMW, and Porsche. It’s quite fascinating to watch these different classes of cars race at the same time.

Once the field begins to spread out, suddenly the two classes end up racing together. They initially start single file in the same class, but the prototypes quickly catch up to the GT class. This of course can cause for some tense moments as the prototypes try to pass, and the GT cars try to keep out of their way.

One Body, Many Parts

Watching the cars moving so fast among one another, but at the same time very gentle making sure they are working together reminds me of Paul’s words to the Corinthian church. “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12-27 NLT). Do the cars always make clean passes? Of course not. From time to time they do get in each others way and at times, scratches and dents appear on the cars. But for the most part, all is well, drivers forgive one another, and the dents and scratches are smoothed over.

This is an example of how the Body of Christ should work together as well. As a matter fact, Paul goes on to say in 1 Corinthians 12 that “the body has different parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. While a number of different automakers race on the same track, they are made up of different kinds of cars, but they all make up the same race.

A similar example is found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. “Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do His work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in faith” (Ephesians 4:13).

I’m always fascinated how we see faith in racing so often. It’s good for us to remember we are in the race together. We might bring different things to the race, but in the end, all the parts are needed.

Just a guy on a journey,
